"Lighting Their Path"
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” Psalm 119:105
This prayer often comes from my lips for one of my children, “Father, please let the light of Your Truth penetrate the darkness of satan’s lies.”
Look what the Psalmist says lights the path for our children – “Your word”.
If your child has a version of the Bible that he is able to read on his own, may I suggest something that will enable him to spend time with The Light. When our children were young and would become antsy (that’s a child development term, isn’t it?) during corporate worship, I would sometimes search out a favorite Bible story in their own Bible for them to read while the rest of us were engaged in more adult-centered learning.
Perhaps you might like to spend a few minutes preparing your child’s Bible for him to easily find his favorite stories. There are bright, colorful post-it tabs that you can mark pages with or, you could write the references on a note card taped in the front of her Bible and she could look them up on her own (maybe with a hint about how to find a hard-to-locate book it if she is a young learner).
Here are a few references for stories for your consideration. Some are the well-known ones that your child will enjoy reading and re-reading. Some may be new ones (boys are especially fond of the war stories in the Old Testament!).
Note: Christian bookstores have a multitude of versions of the Bible for children. You may want to take your child with you and let him pull several off of the shelf and see which one he can most easily read and comprehend when you ask a few simple questions about what was just read.
This list is just a “starter kit”. As you search the scriptures for stories that will be Light for your children, you will be reminded of the power and might of the Sword!
Genesis 1 – Creation
Genesis 2 and 3 – Adam and Eve
Genesis 41:41 through Genesis 45 – The Story of Joseph’s revelation of who he is to his brothers
Exodus 3 through Exodus 4:17 – Moses and the Burning Bush
Joshua 6 – The Fall of the Walls of Jericho
Judges 7 – Gideon Defeats the Midianites
Genesis 6 through 9:17
I Samuel 17 – David and Goliath
II Chronicles 20:1-30 – Jehosophat
You take it from here, dear one, and may your child’s path be lightened by Words of Truth that you train her to turn to in order to pierce the darkness of Satan’s lies.
For the hearts of our children,
Kay
